Title: Environmental and Safety Management Cooperation on Shoreline Oil Spill Response

Summary: Oil transportation and other traffic in the central Baltic Sea area are growing steadily, increasing the risk of pollution from ships. Authorities responsible for shoreline and archipelago oil spill response recognise that their readiness to act is not at an adequate level.

The project EnSaCo OilSpill is intended to reduce negative environmental and socio-economic impacts of an oil spill accident through rapid and effi cient shoreline oil response. All activities are designed to respond to the requirements of the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan. The partners develop two electronic tools and integrate them as part of shoreline authorities’ management systems in all coastal areas of the Central Baltic region of Estonia, Finland and Sweden. One of them deals with mobilisation of technical and human oil spill resources whereas the other deals with ecological prioritising in oil spill response.

The practical development work is supported by international and national workshops, seminars, oiled wildlife rehabilitation trainings, a cross-border and hands-on oil spill exercise and by signing bilateral cooperation agreements.
