<p style='font-size:95%'>The project proposed here aims at improving the dynamical understanding of the sub-polar gyre circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean. The primary research tools are numerical modelling and state-of-the-art statistical and physical analyses. Advance in this field is important because the sub-polar gyre is a key region for decadal climate variability and therefore related to many changes that impact human societies and economies in this region. Demand for improved decadal predictions has increased in recent years. Many research institutions are currently designing elaborate numerical prediction systems for climate services. However, the performance of climate models with respect to the sub-polar gyre has not been investigated yet. Previous work suggests large differences in the simulated dynamics and variability, limiting the prediction skill. We propose the first time inter-comparison of this circulation system in comprehensive climate models. Moreover, we will perform specifically designed experiments with coupled and uncoupled climate models to investigate how decadal climate variability is generated by atmosphere-ocean exchanges, and to quantify the importance of different physical fluxes and different regions. In order to make our results available and facilitate their application, they will be conceptualized in a mathematical model, a minimal prediction system. This mechanistic understanding complements large numerical prediction efforts at partner institutions. The project is motivated by a novel understanding of historic climate changes that the applicant developed during his doctoral studies. We will take this idea as a promising starting point, scrutinize the underlying dynamics and develop this approach into a useful model of climate variability. The applicant will receive complementary training in the necessary skills. He will also improve his educational and outreach skills for which the host is exceptionally well prepared.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The sustainability of tourism development is an ethical requirement and factor of competitiveness in the Mediterranean, particularly for islands and fragile coastal zones, to preserve its vulnerable economic, natural, cultural and social heritage. Not only do environmental abuses impoverish island and coastal heritage, but as today’s tourists are increasingly demanding, the quality, diversity and specific environmental and cultural attributes of tourism supply are a key factor of competitiveness. The final aim of SHIFT (Sustainable Tourism In Fragile Territories) is to experiment strategies to foster sustainable tourism in Mediterranean fragile coastal areas and islands through a transnational partnership proposing an IQM model to optimise supply. The common objective is to redistribute tourism pressure over an extended season and toward different market segments drawn from local cultural and natural diversity. A “total quality” approach embraces technical, strategic and commercial criteria, with all stakeholders working together, and hold the key to the competitiveness of these destinations, supporting new employment and economic growth. All stakeholders have a shared responsibility to make tourism sustainable. Opting for a sustainable approach entails institutional leadership, co-ordination with the private sector, social involvement and skilled technical backing. A new type of tourism planning and management based on broad institutional and socio-economic agreement is a prerequisite for sustainable development Guidelines. The aim is to develop sustainable economies that draw on local assets, support employment and economic sectors and aim at achieving the “total quality” of destinations and their facilities. This integrated approach is vital for islands and fragile coastal areas where a balanced economic development must go hand in hand with the protection and enhancement of the peculiarity and authenticity of their natural and cultural resources. The attraction and environmental balance of these fragile areas will increasingly depend on their ability to develop their trajectories and a well integrated diversified supply. This condition is at the core of the project every partner of the network is aware that an integrated strategy must be met if they are to distribute tourism pressure over an extended season and select the most appropriate market segments for their destinations. The partnership will define different development options within the objective of a transferable model: the partners will select fragile coastal areas/islands for pilot actions the actions will deal with the diverse Mediterranean typologies: • Subject to unsustainable pressure from nearby urban centres or mass tourism • high receptive capacity, good accessibility and potential for diversification but subject to heavy seasonal tourist pressure and suffering competition • limited accessibility with potential for a high quality, specialist tourist market.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Sustainable expansion of European fish farming is dependent on feeds relying less on fishmeal. European researches and industry initiatives over the last decade have resulted in a significantly decrease in the share of fishmeal in fish feeds, but current replacement rates seem to be close to the physiological capacity of the different species. This project will use one of the most important cultured fish in Europe (Sparus aurata) as animal model, to look for a novel strategy for increasing the use of plant meals in aquafeeds, addressing a key question in today nutrition research: can early diet influences long-term outcome? Hence, the main objective is to assess if early manipulations in fish larva can encourage a better use of plant proteins in later life. This issue (nutritional programming, in its wider sense) has been poorly studied in animals other than humans and mammalian models. The project will focus at four different levels: epigenetic programming, compensatory responses, microbiota changes, and growth outcome produced by early exposure to plant proteins and pro/prebiotics. The multidisciplinary nature of the project is strong, involving a combination of well-developed biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and aquaculture. This proposal includes both the transfer of knowledge to the host institution and the training of the candidate in new advanced techniques. Results have the potential capacity to increase the competitiveness of the Mediterranean aquaculture and provide room for further studies at the fundamental and applied levels in S. aurata, and other European cultured fishes. This project is in line with the EU strategy for the sustainable development of aquaculture.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The BANDIERA (""Best Action for National Development of International Expert Researchers Activities"") COFUND Programme proposed by CNR is based on two national Flagship Projects (Progetti Bandiera), pluri-annual large national projects launched within the National Plan for Research 2011-2013, the Government's formal planning of national priorities and strategies for research. Amongst those coordinated by CNR, the two Flagship Projects involved in this proposal are RITMARE, a national project for marine scientific and technological research and NanoMax, project aimed to establish a network of laboratories and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) companies in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The projects have officially started in early 2012 and will run for 5 and 3 years respectively. The BANDIERA Programme is aimed to attract incoming experienced researchers from EU Members States, Associated and Third Countries wishing to undertake interdisciplinary research and training in the fields covered by the Flagship Projects, in order to tribute to the further development and strengthening of their career prospects and also to facilitate cooperation with their institutions and countries of origin. The text of the proposed programme will offer fellows the opportunity to carry out research projects of their choice by means of individual personalised projects, in state of the art research facilities and to enhance their scientific and technical skills through a broad selection of training modules integrated with complementary skills development. In total 13 positions are envisaged (6 for RITMARE and 7 for NanoMax) for a duration of 24 months each. The fellows will be recruited by CNR to ensure homogeneous employment tracts and ditions, and will be hosted either at CNR Institutes or at any other institution participating in the 2 Flagship Projects, on the basis of specific agreements that will be stipulated on purpose, according to their research projects. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Urbanization has been historically widespread and one of the leading causes for habitat and species loss in coastal waters. Today 22,000 km2 of the European coastlines are covered by urban marine structures such as marinas, breakwaters, and seawalls, and development is expected to increase further. However, understanding and mitigating the effects of urban structures on marine life have not been a top priority in marine science and conservation. MarUrbe aims to encourage sustainable management of coastal urban structures by acquiring and disseminating knowledge on methods to promote desired species or prevent nuisance species in order to meet specific management goals, including 1) mitigating loss of species with high conservation value (e.g. Cystoseira spp.), 2) monitoring/controlling the spread of invasive/nuisance species, 3) enhancing fishery resources (e.g. mussels, crabs, and fish stocks) and 4) improving water quality. These goals will be achieved by: 1) exploring, through monitoring and experiments, the relationships between the characteristics of urban marine structures, species distribution and ecological functioning; 2) experimentally testing the effects of fine structural modifications to urban marine structures on the distribution of target species and 3) open communication with the public, local authorities and the scientific community. Expected deliverables include baseline information on the relationships between structure and ecological functioning of urban marine structures, protocols for enhancing or restricting the abundance of target species, and site-specific management guidelines. The links between MarUrbe and the inter-disciplinary international and national research initiatives in which the host laboratory is involved, will be one of the keys to the successful transfer of knowledge and establishment of collaboration.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>A team of 3 SMEs, coordinated by a young woman entrepreneur, proposes a new concept for salvage operations of distressed ships at sea. The proposed concept, called CART (Cooperative Autonomous Robotic Towing system) is based on the development of robotised unmanned marine platforms able to (semi-)automatically execute the high risk operation of linking the emergency towing system of distressed ships to towing vessels. The CART device will be able to optimise the operations for safeguarding the environment, helping to prevent oil pollution at sea, and minimising the risk for human lives. The SME participants, thanks to their know-how in emergency towing devices and salvage operations, as well as in the implementation of automation plants, can formulate and validate new concepts of intervention and contribute to the development of critical sub-systems. Anyway, for bridging the gap between the formulation of an operational concept and its in-field validation with a prototype tool in a time compatible with time-to-market requirements, the SME participants need the transfer of know-how from experienced RTD performers operating in the area of robotics and unmanned marine vehicles, as well as the application of qualification procedures for new technologies. Thus, two European leading research and academic institutions in the field of marine robotics and one of the world's leading classification societies have been involved in the project as RTD developers. They will also perform extended training of SMEP personnel in order to provide them with the needed know-how to execute the follow-up activities of engineering and manufacturing of the CART system. Technologies based on robotised unmanned marine vehicles combined with the coming into force of international safety rules, that will make mandatory for the global fleet the use of emergency towing devices, can play a game-changing role in the field of salvage intervention at sea opening significant business opportunities. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Aquaculture effluents represent a main environmental concern because of their high polluting potential. While fish farms of advanced countries adopt a medium/high-tech approach to this issue, less industrialised countries rely on low-tech systems, if any. Shrimp culture is an important economic sector in which Asian countries are the main producers/exporters and industrialised countries are the main importers/consumers. Asian aquaculture makes up almost 80% of world shrimp (P. monodon and P. vannamei) production. As most of the shrimp farms have serious negative impacts on environment caused by waste effluents containing pollutants, one of the main needs of Asian shrimp culture is the implementation of advanced effluent management systems which can burst the rearing efficiency up to manifold increase of production, reducing the environmental impact. On the other hand, EU aquaculture, which possesses a large know-how on intensive fish farming, lacks an intensive shrimp culture because the only species reared (P. japonicus) can be grown only in extensive plants. The present project envisages a complementary cross-exchange of know-how and competencies in the field of shrimp culture between EU and Indian researchers. Respective aims are: (i) the implementation of cost-effective systems for the treatment of shrimp farm effluent to reduce the environmental impact of Indian commercial aquaculture; (ii) the implementation of closed systems for the reproduction and growth of new shrimp species (P. monodon and P. vannamei) suitable for intensive rearing in EU aquaculture. Available systems and applicable technology will be considered for application and their efficiency to prevent recipient ecosystem pollution will be verified and monitored through analytic characterisation of water, waste and the recipient ecosystems. Specific dissemination and training actions will be performed to extend the knowledge to researchers, operators and policy makers of India and EU.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>There is a strong connection between the protection of fragile areas, the enhancement of natural resource and the sustainable development. The promotion of protected Areas (PA) has a significance that crosses administrative borders: it becomes both a tool for increasing collective environmental awareness and the engine of a wider territorial durable growth. 2Bparks project assumes this perspective developing innovative PA governance patterns with the general scope of integrating environmental considerations into spatial plans ,into investiments choices and core institutional thinking. To increase MED PA sustainable attractiveness, the project appeals to: - Participatory planning for PA management - Sustainable tourism for PA territorial marketing - Science Education and Awareness for PA social cohesion. PA managers, planners, decision makers, researchers, territorial stakeholders and civil society will be involved by PPS in the experimentation of: - PA ACTION PLANS, based on the principles of subsidiary, equality and sustainability and able to capitalize past experiences, previous studies and researches, while implementing the main EU guidelines - Shared MARKETING strategy and Joint Promotional Actions to promote MED PA as exemplary destination, where business meets environment, creating new job opportunities and where nature conservation becomes a factor of social cohesion - INTEGRATED NETWORK to reduce the gap among research and work and to disseminate good practices in the wider context of user groups - Science Education and AWARE RAISING ACTIONS, planned for specific users (seminars, transnational camps to improve pp’s staff, managers, experts and researchers) and target groups, starting form schools and youth to general public (school transnational award, didactic guide, site visits). Project deliverables have been planned with an high degree of capitalization and transferability. The followings, in particular, will ensure project continuity: - The ROADMAP, which is not a further handbook, but an user friendly tool, designed to support PA managers in orienting themselves among the multitude of existing guidelines (Eurosite, Europarc, IUCN…) and selecting the most suitable ones - The NOTEBOOK, a practical tool for public and private operators, who agree in developing the sustainable tourism in the MED PA and in entering the Eurocharter network - The SOURCEBOOK and the linked Edu-platform, to ensure a continuous Knowledge system updating and to increase the employment potentiality of all people interesting in PA, students and private employers. By the end of the project, after the implementation of project experimental actions and the setting up of shared tools, pps expect a new MAINSTREAM to be parks (2Bparks) and to increase values and opportunities of the MED protected Areas.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The Preparatory Phase for a pan-European MARINE BIOLOGICAL RESOURCE CENTRE(EMBRC) research Infrastructure. This application focuses on the technical, legal, governance, and financial issues to prepare a memorandum of understanding to begin to construct EMBRC. It will build on existing Marine Biological Institutes and Research Centres which will be complemented with innovative components and properly embedded into European scientific, Ethics, legal and societal frameworks.The preparative phase of EMBRC will provide the proof of concepts for a key resource to increase excellence and efficacy in Marine Biological Research and secure competitiveness of European research and industry in a global context. This distributed pan-European infrastructure will provide access to model marine organisms and related genomic resources. It will promote access for both research and Science Education. The main costal marine laboratories will be embedded within this RI to provide access to model marine organisms and their ecosystems together with modern technology and 'omic' platforms. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The construction of a European Research Area on marine sciences is a priority due to the transboundary and basin scale nature of most aspects of marine issues, namely biodiversity, ecology, oceanography, natural resources and ecosystem services. Also, the impacts are not limited to a nation as shown by accidental and microplastics pollution, eutrophication, etc. The main objectives to be attained by Seas-Era were the definition of a European Marine and Maritime Research Agenda, aiming at improving co-operation and co-ordination and promoting harmonisation of national/regional research programmes; foster synergies at national and regional level, mobilising competitive and non-competitive funds for research in a more coordinated way, through joint calls and common programs; propose a plan for a better and sustainable use and sharing of the existing Marine Research Infrastructures, and a road map for new investments; reduce imbalances among regions through human capacity building, setting-up a pan-European training and mobility strategy for human resources; and enhance public awareness towards marine and maritime scientific and policy issues in Europe to translate the RTD activities into social, economic and cultural benefits. These general objectives were to be first implemented at the basin scale as a step forward in building-up the overarched pan-European strategy and making progress in establishing a stable and durable structure for empowering and strengthening marine research all across Europe.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The Marine Strategy Framework Directive is designed to deliver Good Environmental Status (GES) in EU marine waters by 2020. This Directive requires that Member States (MS) with marine territories put in place measures to achieve and maintain GES within a defined timeframe and according to eleven key descriptors of environmental status. However, there is a significant knowledge deficit which may hinder full implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES in EU waters. STAGES (Science and Technology Advancing Governance on Good Environmental Status) project is designed to directly address this knowledge deficit. The project has two overarching goals: i) to synthesise per major MSFD themes the information from research projects and ii) to develop a platform to ensure that the knowledge generated through European science and technology can be channelled to a broad range of relevant end users, to inform and facilitate implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES. To achieve this, STAGES will target a number of critical gaps in the knowledge transfer process. Firstly, STAGES will identify and synthesize relevant existing EU research results and make them available in a usable format for decision and policy making authorities. Through comprehensive scientific foresight targeted at MSFD knowledge gaps, STAGES will identify needs for further research. STAGES will also develop innovative solutions to achieve an effective collaboration between the broad range of stakeholders necessary to support MSDF implementation, including policy and governance, science, industry and civil society. Moreover, the role and input of MSFD stakeholders will be central to the activities of the project and to the proposals for a science policy interface which will be delivered by the project. The partnership has been constructed to include a combination of EU/international organizations which can represent a broad constituency of MSFD stakeholders, and national organizations with responsibility to support research and provide advice on MSFD implementation at MS level.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>To evaluate the Patella ferruginea (ribbed mediterranean limpet) distribution and Posidonia oceanica (mediterranean tapeweed) meadows in the Sinis MPA. The Patella ferruginea is endemic to the Mediterranean, it is the most endangered marine species on the list of the European Council Directive 92/43/EEC. Its Mediterranean range has progressively contracted to a few restricted areas and the species is now threatened with extinction. Human pressure is probably the main contributing factor to P. ferruginea's currently endangered status. The experimental studies was realized to evaluate its distribution in the Sinis MPA in relation to the human impact that seems to be the principal cause of the stock decrease. Specific educational programmes were conducted in order to reduce its collection for fishing, food or for fun as decorative objects. The study was also conducted to support local policy development, in order to properly assess the future programmes of conservation in the Sinis MPA. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>"EU CISE 2020 is an important step towards the accomplishment of the European roadmap for CISE; the project attains the widest possible experimental environment of innovative and collaborative processes between European maritime institutions.EU CISE 2020 takes as reference a broad spectrum of factors in the field of European Integrated Maritime Surveillance, arising from the European legal framework, as well as from studies, pilot and R&D projects accomplished in the last three years; in particular, the project is based on:• the CISE Roadmap developed by DG MARE• the results of European pilot projects BluemassMed and MARSUNO,• the work performed by CISE TAG-Technical Advisory Group,• the European studies on maritime surveillance already carried out,• the results of Security research projects in progress, with particular reference to PERSEUS and SEABILLA• the needs of innovation expressed by the maritime stakeholders arising from their operational experience in managing maritime surveillance processes and systems at European, international and national levels.Under the guidance of a Stakeholder Board, EU CISE 2020 will manage in parallel the elaboration of the action plan for the operational validation of new elements of R&D needed to develop CISE (concepts of architecture, concepts of operation, standards of data and services, new services, new processes, ...), the development of an open European test bed for incremental advancement of CISE in the medium-long term, the independent Verification & Validation of the new elements of R&D, as well as the assessment of organizational instruments necessary to sustain the appropriate governance structure and to stimulate public-private cooperation.EU CISE 2020 draws a major space of opportunity for national and European maritime Institutions to collaboratively innovate their processes and systems, and for European enterprises to develop a new range of solutions and services competitive in the international market." </p>

management on marine socio-ecological systems, to promote co-responsibility
among the different actors, to define a more sustainable collective vision, and to
facilitate grounds for concerted actions through the successful implementation of
the MMLAP (Mobilisation and Mutual Learning Action Plans on societal
challenges). The main focus was to provide and evaluate mechanisms to enable
society to perceive the impact of litter on the marine environment, to identify the
land-based activities that are involved and collectively arrive at solutions to
reduce that impact – in particular solutions that can be implemented locally but
have a regional effect.
MARLISCO’ s overarching goal was to raise public awareness, facilitate dialogue
and promote co-responsibility among the different actors towards a joint vision
for the sustainable management of marine litter across all European seas.
MARLICO activities took place in the four European Regional Seas: North-East
Atlantic, Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea, by a consortium with members
located in 15 coastal countries.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The project proposed here aims at improving the dynamical understanding of the sub-polar gyre circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean. The primary research tools are numerical modelling and state-of-the-art statistical and physical analyses. Advance in this field is important because the sub-polar gyre is a key region for decadal climate variability and therefore related to many changes that impact human societies and economies in this region. Demand for improved decadal predictions has increased in recent years. Many research institutions are currently designing elaborate numerical prediction systems for climate services. However, the performance of climate models with respect to the sub-polar gyre has not been investigated yet. Previous work suggests large differences in the simulated dynamics and variability, limiting the prediction skill. We propose the first time inter-comparison of this circulation system in comprehensive climate models. Moreover, we will perform specifically designed experiments with coupled and uncoupled climate models to investigate how decadal climate variability is generated by atmosphere-ocean exchanges, and to quantify the importance of different physical fluxes and different regions. In order to make our results available and facilitate their application, they will be conceptualized in a mathematical model, a minimal prediction system. This mechanistic understanding complements large numerical prediction efforts at partner institutions. The project is motivated by a novel understanding of historic climate changes that the applicant developed during his doctoral studies. We will take this idea as a promising starting point, scrutinize the underlying dynamics and develop this approach into a useful model of climate variability. The applicant will receive complementary training in the necessary skills. He will also improve his educational and outreach skills for which the host is exceptionally well prepared.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The sustainability of tourism development is an ethical requirement and factor of competitiveness in the Mediterranean, particularly for islands and fragile coastal zones, to preserve its vulnerable economic, natural, cultural and social heritage. Not only do environmental abuses impoverish island and coastal heritage, but as today’s tourists are increasingly demanding, the quality, diversity and specific environmental and cultural attributes of tourism supply are a key factor of competitiveness. The final aim of SHIFT (Sustainable Tourism In Fragile Territories) is to experiment strategies to foster sustainable tourism in Mediterranean fragile coastal areas and islands through a transnational partnership proposing an IQM model to optimise supply. The common objective is to redistribute tourism pressure over an extended season and toward different market segments drawn from local cultural and natural diversity. A “total quality” approach embraces technical, strategic and commercial criteria, with all stakeholders working together, and hold the key to the competitiveness of these destinations, supporting new employment and economic growth. All stakeholders have a shared responsibility to make tourism sustainable. Opting for a sustainable approach entails institutional leadership, co-ordination with the private sector, social involvement and skilled technical backing. A new type of tourism planning and management based on broad institutional and socio-economic agreement is a prerequisite for sustainable development Guidelines. The aim is to develop sustainable economies that draw on local assets, support employment and economic sectors and aim at achieving the “total quality” of destinations and their facilities. This integrated approach is vital for islands and fragile coastal areas where a balanced economic development must go hand in hand with the protection and enhancement of the peculiarity and authenticity of their natural and cultural resources. The attraction and environmental balance of these fragile areas will increasingly depend on their ability to develop their trajectories and a well integrated diversified supply. This condition is at the core of the project every partner of the network is aware that an integrated strategy must be met if they are to distribute tourism pressure over an extended season and select the most appropriate market segments for their destinations. The partnership will define different development options within the objective of a transferable model: the partners will select fragile coastal areas/islands for pilot actions the actions will deal with the diverse Mediterranean typologies: • Subject to unsustainable pressure from nearby urban centres or mass tourism • high receptive capacity, good accessibility and potential for diversification but subject to heavy seasonal tourist pressure and suffering competition • limited accessibility with potential for a high quality, specialist tourist market.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Sustainable expansion of European fish farming is dependent on feeds relying less on fishmeal. European researches and industry initiatives over the last decade have resulted in a significantly decrease in the share of fishmeal in fish feeds, but current replacement rates seem to be close to the physiological capacity of the different species. This project will use one of the most important cultured fish in Europe (Sparus aurata) as animal model, to look for a novel strategy for increasing the use of plant meals in aquafeeds, addressing a key question in today nutrition research: can early diet influences long-term outcome? Hence, the main objective is to assess if early manipulations in fish larva can encourage a better use of plant proteins in later life. This issue (nutritional programming, in its wider sense) has been poorly studied in animals other than humans and mammalian models. The project will focus at four different levels: epigenetic programming, compensatory responses, microbiota changes, and growth outcome produced by early exposure to plant proteins and pro/prebiotics. The multidisciplinary nature of the project is strong, involving a combination of well-developed biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and aquaculture. This proposal includes both the transfer of knowledge to the host institution and the training of the candidate in new advanced techniques. Results have the potential capacity to increase the competitiveness of the Mediterranean aquaculture and provide room for further studies at the fundamental and applied levels in S. aurata, and other European cultured fishes. This project is in line with the EU strategy for the sustainable development of aquaculture.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The BANDIERA (""Best Action for National Development of International Expert Researchers Activities"") COFUND Programme proposed by CNR is based on two national Flagship Projects (Progetti Bandiera), pluri-annual large national projects launched within the National Plan for Research 2011-2013, the Government's formal planning of national priorities and strategies for research. Amongst those coordinated by CNR, the two Flagship Projects involved in this proposal are RITMARE, a national project for marine scientific and technological research and NanoMax, project aimed to establish a network of laboratories and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) companies in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The projects have officially started in early 2012 and will run for 5 and 3 years respectively. The BANDIERA Programme is aimed to attract incoming experienced researchers from EU Members States, Associated and Third Countries wishing to undertake interdisciplinary research and training in the fields covered by the Flagship Projects, in order to tribute to the further development and strengthening of their career prospects and also to facilitate cooperation with their institutions and countries of origin. The text of the proposed programme will offer fellows the opportunity to carry out research projects of their choice by means of individual personalised projects, in state of the art research facilities and to enhance their scientific and technical skills through a broad selection of training modules integrated with complementary skills development. In total 13 positions are envisaged (6 for RITMARE and 7 for NanoMax) for a duration of 24 months each. The fellows will be recruited by CNR to ensure homogeneous employment tracts and ditions, and will be hosted either at CNR Institutes or at any other institution participating in the 2 Flagship Projects, on the basis of specific agreements that will be stipulated on purpose, according to their research projects. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Urbanization has been historically widespread and one of the leading causes for habitat and species loss in coastal waters. Today 22,000 km2 of the European coastlines are covered by urban marine structures such as marinas, breakwaters, and seawalls, and development is expected to increase further. However, understanding and mitigating the effects of urban structures on marine life have not been a top priority in marine science and conservation. MarUrbe aims to encourage sustainable management of coastal urban structures by acquiring and disseminating knowledge on methods to promote desired species or prevent nuisance species in order to meet specific management goals, including 1) mitigating loss of species with high conservation value (e.g. Cystoseira spp.), 2) monitoring/controlling the spread of invasive/nuisance species, 3) enhancing fishery resources (e.g. mussels, crabs, and fish stocks) and 4) improving water quality. These goals will be achieved by: 1) exploring, through monitoring and experiments, the relationships between the characteristics of urban marine structures, species distribution and ecological functioning; 2) experimentally testing the effects of fine structural modifications to urban marine structures on the distribution of target species and 3) open communication with the public, local authorities and the scientific community. Expected deliverables include baseline information on the relationships between structure and ecological functioning of urban marine structures, protocols for enhancing or restricting the abundance of target species, and site-specific management guidelines. The links between MarUrbe and the inter-disciplinary international and national research initiatives in which the host laboratory is involved, will be one of the keys to the successful transfer of knowledge and establishment of collaboration.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>A team of 3 SMEs, coordinated by a young woman entrepreneur, proposes a new concept for salvage operations of distressed ships at sea. The proposed concept, called CART (Cooperative Autonomous Robotic Towing system) is based on the development of robotised unmanned marine platforms able to (semi-)automatically execute the high risk operation of linking the emergency towing system of distressed ships to towing vessels. The CART device will be able to optimise the operations for safeguarding the environment, helping to prevent oil pollution at sea, and minimising the risk for human lives. The SME participants, thanks to their know-how in emergency towing devices and salvage operations, as well as in the implementation of automation plants, can formulate and validate new concepts of intervention and contribute to the development of critical sub-systems. Anyway, for bridging the gap between the formulation of an operational concept and its in-field validation with a prototype tool in a time compatible with time-to-market requirements, the SME participants need the transfer of know-how from experienced RTD performers operating in the area of robotics and unmanned marine vehicles, as well as the application of qualification procedures for new technologies. Thus, two European leading research and academic institutions in the field of marine robotics and one of the world's leading classification societies have been involved in the project as RTD developers. They will also perform extended training of SMEP personnel in order to provide them with the needed know-how to execute the follow-up activities of engineering and manufacturing of the CART system. Technologies based on robotised unmanned marine vehicles combined with the coming into force of international safety rules, that will make mandatory for the global fleet the use of emergency towing devices, can play a game-changing role in the field of salvage intervention at sea opening significant business opportunities. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Aquaculture effluents represent a main environmental concern because of their high polluting potential. While fish farms of advanced countries adopt a medium/high-tech approach to this issue, less industrialised countries rely on low-tech systems, if any. Shrimp culture is an important economic sector in which Asian countries are the main producers/exporters and industrialised countries are the main importers/consumers. Asian aquaculture makes up almost 80% of world shrimp (P. monodon and P. vannamei) production. As most of the shrimp farms have serious negative impacts on environment caused by waste effluents containing pollutants, one of the main needs of Asian shrimp culture is the implementation of advanced effluent management systems which can burst the rearing efficiency up to manifold increase of production, reducing the environmental impact. On the other hand, EU aquaculture, which possesses a large know-how on intensive fish farming, lacks an intensive shrimp culture because the only species reared (P. japonicus) can be grown only in extensive plants. The present project envisages a complementary cross-exchange of know-how and competencies in the field of shrimp culture between EU and Indian researchers. Respective aims are: (i) the implementation of cost-effective systems for the treatment of shrimp farm effluent to reduce the environmental impact of Indian commercial aquaculture; (ii) the implementation of closed systems for the reproduction and growth of new shrimp species (P. monodon and P. vannamei) suitable for intensive rearing in EU aquaculture. Available systems and applicable technology will be considered for application and their efficiency to prevent recipient ecosystem pollution will be verified and monitored through analytic characterisation of water, waste and the recipient ecosystems. Specific dissemination and training actions will be performed to extend the knowledge to researchers, operators and policy makers of India and EU.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>There is a strong connection between the protection of fragile areas, the enhancement of natural resource and the sustainable development. The promotion of protected Areas (PA) has a significance that crosses administrative borders: it becomes both a tool for increasing collective environmental awareness and the engine of a wider territorial durable growth. 2Bparks project assumes this perspective developing innovative PA governance patterns with the general scope of integrating environmental considerations into spatial plans ,into investiments choices and core institutional thinking. To increase MED PA sustainable attractiveness, the project appeals to: - Participatory planning for PA management - Sustainable tourism for PA territorial marketing - Science Education and Awareness for PA social cohesion. PA managers, planners, decision makers, researchers, territorial stakeholders and civil society will be involved by PPS in the experimentation of: - PA ACTION PLANS, based on the principles of subsidiary, equality and sustainability and able to capitalize past experiences, previous studies and researches, while implementing the main EU guidelines - Shared MARKETING strategy and Joint Promotional Actions to promote MED PA as exemplary destination, where business meets environment, creating new job opportunities and where nature conservation becomes a factor of social cohesion - INTEGRATED NETWORK to reduce the gap among research and work and to disseminate good practices in the wider context of user groups - Science Education and AWARE RAISING ACTIONS, planned for specific users (seminars, transnational camps to improve pp’s staff, managers, experts and researchers) and target groups, starting form schools and youth to general public (school transnational award, didactic guide, site visits). Project deliverables have been planned with an high degree of capitalization and transferability. The followings, in particular, will ensure project continuity: - The ROADMAP, which is not a further handbook, but an user friendly tool, designed to support PA managers in orienting themselves among the multitude of existing guidelines (Eurosite, Europarc, IUCN…) and selecting the most suitable ones - The NOTEBOOK, a practical tool for public and private operators, who agree in developing the sustainable tourism in the MED PA and in entering the Eurocharter network - The SOURCEBOOK and the linked Edu-platform, to ensure a continuous Knowledge system updating and to increase the employment potentiality of all people interesting in PA, students and private employers. By the end of the project, after the implementation of project experimental actions and the setting up of shared tools, pps expect a new MAINSTREAM to be parks (2Bparks) and to increase values and opportunities of the MED protected Areas.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The Preparatory Phase for a pan-European MARINE BIOLOGICAL RESOURCE CENTRE(EMBRC) research Infrastructure. This application focuses on the technical, legal, governance, and financial issues to prepare a memorandum of understanding to begin to construct EMBRC. It will build on existing Marine Biological Institutes and Research Centres which will be complemented with innovative components and properly embedded into European scientific, Ethics, legal and societal frameworks.The preparative phase of EMBRC will provide the proof of concepts for a key resource to increase excellence and efficacy in Marine Biological Research and secure competitiveness of European research and industry in a global context. This distributed pan-European infrastructure will provide access to model marine organisms and related genomic resources. It will promote access for both research and Science Education. The main costal marine laboratories will be embedded within this RI to provide access to model marine organisms and their ecosystems together with modern technology and 'omic' platforms. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The construction of a European Research Area on marine sciences is a priority due to the transboundary and basin scale nature of most aspects of marine issues, namely biodiversity, ecology, oceanography, natural resources and ecosystem services. Also, the impacts are not limited to a nation as shown by accidental and microplastics pollution, eutrophication, etc. The main objectives to be attained by Seas-Era were the definition of a European Marine and Maritime Research Agenda, aiming at improving co-operation and co-ordination and promoting harmonisation of national/regional research programmes; foster synergies at national and regional level, mobilising competitive and non-competitive funds for research in a more coordinated way, through joint calls and common programs; propose a plan for a better and sustainable use and sharing of the existing Marine Research Infrastructures, and a road map for new investments; reduce imbalances among regions through human capacity building, setting-up a pan-European training and mobility strategy for human resources; and enhance public awareness towards marine and maritime scientific and policy issues in Europe to translate the RTD activities into social, economic and cultural benefits. These general objectives were to be first implemented at the basin scale as a step forward in building-up the overarched pan-European strategy and making progress in establishing a stable and durable structure for empowering and strengthening marine research all across Europe.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The Marine Strategy Framework Directive is designed to deliver Good Environmental Status (GES) in EU marine waters by 2020. This Directive requires that Member States (MS) with marine territories put in place measures to achieve and maintain GES within a defined timeframe and according to eleven key descriptors of environmental status. However, there is a significant knowledge deficit which may hinder full implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES in EU waters. STAGES (Science and Technology Advancing Governance on Good Environmental Status) project is designed to directly address this knowledge deficit. The project has two overarching goals: i) to synthesise per major MSFD themes the information from research projects and ii) to develop a platform to ensure that the knowledge generated through European science and technology can be channelled to a broad range of relevant end users, to inform and facilitate implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES. To achieve this, STAGES will target a number of critical gaps in the knowledge transfer process. Firstly, STAGES will identify and synthesize relevant existing EU research results and make them available in a usable format for decision and policy making authorities. Through comprehensive scientific foresight targeted at MSFD knowledge gaps, STAGES will identify needs for further research. STAGES will also develop innovative solutions to achieve an effective collaboration between the broad range of stakeholders necessary to support MSDF implementation, including policy and governance, science, industry and civil society. Moreover, the role and input of MSFD stakeholders will be central to the activities of the project and to the proposals for a science policy interface which will be delivered by the project. The partnership has been constructed to include a combination of EU/international organizations which can represent a broad constituency of MSFD stakeholders, and national organizations with responsibility to support research and provide advice on MSFD implementation at MS level.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>To evaluate the Patella ferruginea (ribbed mediterranean limpet) distribution and Posidonia oceanica (mediterranean tapeweed) meadows in the Sinis MPA. The Patella ferruginea is endemic to the Mediterranean, it is the most endangered marine species on the list of the European Council Directive 92/43/EEC. Its Mediterranean range has progressively contracted to a few restricted areas and the species is now threatened with extinction. Human pressure is probably the main contributing factor to P. ferruginea's currently endangered status. The experimental studies was realized to evaluate its distribution in the Sinis MPA in relation to the human impact that seems to be the principal cause of the stock decrease. Specific educational programmes were conducted in order to reduce its collection for fishing, food or for fun as decorative objects. The study was also conducted to support local policy development, in order to properly assess the future programmes of conservation in the Sinis MPA. </p>

the MMLAP (Mobilisation and Mutual Learning Action Plans on societal
challenges). The main focus was to provide and evaluate mechanisms to enable
society to perceive the impact of litter on the marine environment, to identify the
land-based activities that are involved and collectively arrive at solutions to
reduce that impact – in particular solutions that can be implemented locally but
have a regional effect.
MARLISCO’ s overarching goal was to raise public awareness, facilitate dialogue
and promote co-responsibility among the different actors towards a joint vision
for the sustainable management of marine litter across all European seas.
MARLICO activities took place in the four European Regional Seas: North-East
Atlantic, Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea, by a consortium with members
located in 15 coastal countries.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The project proposed here aims at improving the dynamical understanding of the sub-polar gyre circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean. The primary research tools are numerical modelling and state-of-the-art statistical and physical analyses. Advance in this field is important because the sub-polar gyre is a key region for decadal climate variability and therefore related to many changes that impact human societies and economies in this region. Demand for improved decadal predictions has increased in recent years. Many research institutions are currently designing elaborate numerical prediction systems for climate services. However, the performance of climate models with respect to the sub-polar gyre has not been investigated yet. Previous work suggests large differences in the simulated dynamics and variability, limiting the prediction skill. We propose the first time inter-comparison of this circulation system in comprehensive climate models. Moreover, we will perform specifically designed experiments with coupled and uncoupled climate models to investigate how decadal climate variability is generated by atmosphere-ocean exchanges, and to quantify the importance of different physical fluxes and different regions. In order to make our results available and facilitate their application, they will be conceptualized in a mathematical model, a minimal prediction system. This mechanistic understanding complements large numerical prediction efforts at partner institutions. The project is motivated by a novel understanding of historic climate changes that the applicant developed during his doctoral studies. We will take this idea as a promising starting point, scrutinize the underlying dynamics and develop this approach into a useful model of climate variability. The applicant will receive complementary training in the necessary skills. He will also improve his educational and outreach skills for which the host is exceptionally well prepared.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The sustainability of tourism development is an ethical requirement and factor of competitiveness in the Mediterranean, particularly for islands and fragile coastal zones, to preserve its vulnerable economic, natural, cultural and social heritage. Not only do environmental abuses impoverish island and coastal heritage, but as today’s tourists are increasingly demanding, the quality, diversity and specific environmental and cultural attributes of tourism supply are a key factor of competitiveness. The final aim of SHIFT (Sustainable Tourism In Fragile Territories) is to experiment strategies to foster sustainable tourism in Mediterranean fragile coastal areas and islands through a transnational partnership proposing an IQM model to optimise supply. The common objective is to redistribute tourism pressure over an extended season and toward different market segments drawn from local cultural and natural diversity. A “total quality” approach embraces technical, strategic and commercial criteria, with all stakeholders working together, and hold the key to the competitiveness of these destinations, supporting new employment and economic growth. All stakeholders have a shared responsibility to make tourism sustainable. Opting for a sustainable approach entails institutional leadership, co-ordination with the private sector, social involvement and skilled technical backing. A new type of tourism planning and management based on broad institutional and socio-economic agreement is a prerequisite for sustainable development Guidelines. The aim is to develop sustainable economies that draw on local assets, support employment and economic sectors and aim at achieving the “total quality” of destinations and their facilities. This integrated approach is vital for islands and fragile coastal areas where a balanced economic development must go hand in hand with the protection and enhancement of the peculiarity and authenticity of their natural and cultural resources. The attraction and environmental balance of these fragile areas will increasingly depend on their ability to develop their trajectories and a well integrated diversified supply. This condition is at the core of the project every partner of the network is aware that an integrated strategy must be met if they are to distribute tourism pressure over an extended season and select the most appropriate market segments for their destinations. The partnership will define different development options within the objective of a transferable model: the partners will select fragile coastal areas/islands for pilot actions the actions will deal with the diverse Mediterranean typologies: • Subject to unsustainable pressure from nearby urban centres or mass tourism • high receptive capacity, good accessibility and potential for diversification but subject to heavy seasonal tourist pressure and suffering competition • limited accessibility with potential for a high quality, specialist tourist market.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Sustainable expansion of European fish farming is dependent on feeds relying less on fishmeal. European researches and industry initiatives over the last decade have resulted in a significantly decrease in the share of fishmeal in fish feeds, but current replacement rates seem to be close to the physiological capacity of the different species. This project will use one of the most important cultured fish in Europe (Sparus aurata) as animal model, to look for a novel strategy for increasing the use of plant meals in aquafeeds, addressing a key question in today nutrition research: can early diet influences long-term outcome? Hence, the main objective is to assess if early manipulations in fish larva can encourage a better use of plant proteins in later life. This issue (nutritional programming, in its wider sense) has been poorly studied in animals other than humans and mammalian models. The project will focus at four different levels: epigenetic programming, compensatory responses, microbiota changes, and growth outcome produced by early exposure to plant proteins and pro/prebiotics. The multidisciplinary nature of the project is strong, involving a combination of well-developed biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and aquaculture. This proposal includes both the transfer of knowledge to the host institution and the training of the candidate in new advanced techniques. Results have the potential capacity to increase the competitiveness of the Mediterranean aquaculture and provide room for further studies at the fundamental and applied levels in S. aurata, and other European cultured fishes. This project is in line with the EU strategy for the sustainable development of aquaculture.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The BANDIERA (""Best Action for National Development of International Expert Researchers Activities"") COFUND Programme proposed by CNR is based on two national Flagship Projects (Progetti Bandiera), pluri-annual large national projects launched within the National Plan for Research 2011-2013, the Government's formal planning of national priorities and strategies for research. Amongst those coordinated by CNR, the two Flagship Projects involved in this proposal are RITMARE, a national project for marine scientific and technological research and NanoMax, project aimed to establish a network of laboratories and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) companies in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The projects have officially started in early 2012 and will run for 5 and 3 years respectively. The BANDIERA Programme is aimed to attract incoming experienced researchers from EU Members States, Associated and Third Countries wishing to undertake interdisciplinary research and training in the fields covered by the Flagship Projects, in order to tribute to the further development and strengthening of their career prospects and also to facilitate cooperation with their institutions and countries of origin. The text of the proposed programme will offer fellows the opportunity to carry out research projects of their choice by means of individual personalised projects, in state of the art research facilities and to enhance their scientific and technical skills through a broad selection of training modules integrated with complementary skills development. In total 13 positions are envisaged (6 for RITMARE and 7 for NanoMax) for a duration of 24 months each. The fellows will be recruited by CNR to ensure homogeneous employment tracts and ditions, and will be hosted either at CNR Institutes or at any other institution participating in the 2 Flagship Projects, on the basis of specific agreements that will be stipulated on purpose, according to their research projects. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Urbanization has been historically widespread and one of the leading causes for habitat and species loss in coastal waters. Today 22,000 km2 of the European coastlines are covered by urban marine structures such as marinas, breakwaters, and seawalls, and development is expected to increase further. However, understanding and mitigating the effects of urban structures on marine life have not been a top priority in marine science and conservation. MarUrbe aims to encourage sustainable management of coastal urban structures by acquiring and disseminating knowledge on methods to promote desired species or prevent nuisance species in order to meet specific management goals, including 1) mitigating loss of species with high conservation value (e.g. Cystoseira spp.), 2) monitoring/controlling the spread of invasive/nuisance species, 3) enhancing fishery resources (e.g. mussels, crabs, and fish stocks) and 4) improving water quality. These goals will be achieved by: 1) exploring, through monitoring and experiments, the relationships between the characteristics of urban marine structures, species distribution and ecological functioning; 2) experimentally testing the effects of fine structural modifications to urban marine structures on the distribution of target species and 3) open communication with the public, local authorities and the scientific community. Expected deliverables include baseline information on the relationships between structure and ecological functioning of urban marine structures, protocols for enhancing or restricting the abundance of target species, and site-specific management guidelines. The links between MarUrbe and the inter-disciplinary international and national research initiatives in which the host laboratory is involved, will be one of the keys to the successful transfer of knowledge and establishment of collaboration.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>A team of 3 SMEs, coordinated by a young woman entrepreneur, proposes a new concept for salvage operations of distressed ships at sea. The proposed concept, called CART (Cooperative Autonomous Robotic Towing system) is based on the development of robotised unmanned marine platforms able to (semi-)automatically execute the high risk operation of linking the emergency towing system of distressed ships to towing vessels. The CART device will be able to optimise the operations for safeguarding the environment, helping to prevent oil pollution at sea, and minimising the risk for human lives. The SME participants, thanks to their know-how in emergency towing devices and salvage operations, as well as in the implementation of automation plants, can formulate and validate new concepts of intervention and contribute to the development of critical sub-systems. Anyway, for bridging the gap between the formulation of an operational concept and its in-field validation with a prototype tool in a time compatible with time-to-market requirements, the SME participants need the transfer of know-how from experienced RTD performers operating in the area of robotics and unmanned marine vehicles, as well as the application of qualification procedures for new technologies. Thus, two European leading research and academic institutions in the field of marine robotics and one of the world's leading classification societies have been involved in the project as RTD developers. They will also perform extended training of SMEP personnel in order to provide them with the needed know-how to execute the follow-up activities of engineering and manufacturing of the CART system. Technologies based on robotised unmanned marine vehicles combined with the coming into force of international safety rules, that will make mandatory for the global fleet the use of emergency towing devices, can play a game-changing role in the field of salvage intervention at sea opening significant business opportunities. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>Aquaculture effluents represent a main environmental concern because of their high polluting potential. While fish farms of advanced countries adopt a medium/high-tech approach to this issue, less industrialised countries rely on low-tech systems, if any. Shrimp culture is an important economic sector in which Asian countries are the main producers/exporters and industrialised countries are the main importers/consumers. Asian aquaculture makes up almost 80% of world shrimp (P. monodon and P. vannamei) production. As most of the shrimp farms have serious negative impacts on environment caused by waste effluents containing pollutants, one of the main needs of Asian shrimp culture is the implementation of advanced effluent management systems which can burst the rearing efficiency up to manifold increase of production, reducing the environmental impact. On the other hand, EU aquaculture, which possesses a large know-how on intensive fish farming, lacks an intensive shrimp culture because the only species reared (P. japonicus) can be grown only in extensive plants. The present project envisages a complementary cross-exchange of know-how and competencies in the field of shrimp culture between EU and Indian researchers. Respective aims are: (i) the implementation of cost-effective systems for the treatment of shrimp farm effluent to reduce the environmental impact of Indian commercial aquaculture; (ii) the implementation of closed systems for the reproduction and growth of new shrimp species (P. monodon and P. vannamei) suitable for intensive rearing in EU aquaculture. Available systems and applicable technology will be considered for application and their efficiency to prevent recipient ecosystem pollution will be verified and monitored through analytic characterisation of water, waste and the recipient ecosystems. Specific dissemination and training actions will be performed to extend the knowledge to researchers, operators and policy makers of India and EU.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>There is a strong connection between the protection of fragile areas, the enhancement of natural resource and the sustainable development. The promotion of protected Areas (PA) has a significance that crosses administrative borders: it becomes both a tool for increasing collective environmental awareness and the engine of a wider territorial durable growth. 2Bparks project assumes this perspective developing innovative PA governance patterns with the general scope of integrating environmental considerations into spatial plans ,into investiments choices and core institutional thinking. To increase MED PA sustainable attractiveness, the project appeals to: - Participatory planning for PA management - Sustainable tourism for PA territorial marketing - Science Education and Awareness for PA social cohesion. PA managers, planners, decision makers, researchers, territorial stakeholders and civil society will be involved by PPS in the experimentation of: - PA ACTION PLANS, based on the principles of subsidiary, equality and sustainability and able to capitalize past experiences, previous studies and researches, while implementing the main EU guidelines - Shared MARKETING strategy and Joint Promotional Actions to promote MED PA as exemplary destination, where business meets environment, creating new job opportunities and where nature conservation becomes a factor of social cohesion - INTEGRATED NETWORK to reduce the gap among research and work and to disseminate good practices in the wider context of user groups - Science Education and AWARE RAISING ACTIONS, planned for specific users (seminars, transnational camps to improve pp’s staff, managers, experts and researchers) and target groups, starting form schools and youth to general public (school transnational award, didactic guide, site visits). Project deliverables have been planned with an high degree of capitalization and transferability. The followings, in particular, will ensure project continuity: - The ROADMAP, which is not a further handbook, but an user friendly tool, designed to support PA managers in orienting themselves among the multitude of existing guidelines (Eurosite, Europarc, IUCN…) and selecting the most suitable ones - The NOTEBOOK, a practical tool for public and private operators, who agree in developing the sustainable tourism in the MED PA and in entering the Eurocharter network - The SOURCEBOOK and the linked Edu-platform, to ensure a continuous Knowledge system updating and to increase the employment potentiality of all people interesting in PA, students and private employers. By the end of the project, after the implementation of project experimental actions and the setting up of shared tools, pps expect a new MAINSTREAM to be parks (2Bparks) and to increase values and opportunities of the MED protected Areas.</p>

This application focuses on the technical, legal, governance, and financial issues to prepare a memorandum of understanding to begin to construct EMBRC. It will build on existing Marine Biological Institutes and Research Centres which will be complemented with innovative components and properly embedded into European scientific, Ethics, legal and societal frameworks.The preparative phase of EMBRC will provide the proof of concepts for a key resource to increase excellence and efficacy in Marine Biological Research and secure competitiveness of European research and industry in a global context. This distributed pan-European infrastructure will provide access to model marine organisms and related genomic resources. It will promote access for both research and Science Education. The main costal marine laboratories will be embedded within this RI to provide access to model marine organisms and their ecosystems together with modern technology and 'omic' platforms. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The construction of a European Research Area on marine sciences is a priority due to the transboundary and basin scale nature of most aspects of marine issues, namely biodiversity, ecology, oceanography, natural resources and ecosystem services. Also, the impacts are not limited to a nation as shown by accidental and microplastics pollution, eutrophication, etc. The main objectives to be attained by Seas-Era were the definition of a European Marine and Maritime Research Agenda, aiming at improving co-operation and co-ordination and promoting harmonisation of national/regional research programmes; foster synergies at national and regional level, mobilising competitive and non-competitive funds for research in a more coordinated way, through joint calls and common programs; propose a plan for a better and sustainable use and sharing of the existing Marine Research Infrastructures, and a road map for new investments; reduce imbalances among regions through human capacity building, setting-up a pan-European training and mobility strategy for human resources; and enhance public awareness towards marine and maritime scientific and policy issues in Europe to translate the RTD activities into social, economic and cultural benefits. These general objectives were to be first implemented at the basin scale as a step forward in building-up the overarched pan-European strategy and making progress in establishing a stable and durable structure for empowering and strengthening marine research all across Europe.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The Marine Strategy Framework Directive is designed to deliver Good Environmental Status (GES) in EU marine waters by 2020. This Directive requires that Member States (MS) with marine territories put in place measures to achieve and maintain GES within a defined timeframe and according to eleven key descriptors of environmental status. However, there is a significant knowledge deficit which may hinder full implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES in EU waters. STAGES (Science and Technology Advancing Governance on Good Environmental Status) project is designed to directly address this knowledge deficit. The project has two overarching goals: i) to synthesise per major MSFD themes the information from research projects and ii) to develop a platform to ensure that the knowledge generated through European science and technology can be channelled to a broad range of relevant end users, to inform and facilitate implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES. To achieve this, STAGES will target a number of critical gaps in the knowledge transfer process. Firstly, STAGES will identify and synthesize relevant existing EU research results and make them available in a usable format for decision and policy making authorities. Through comprehensive scientific foresight targeted at MSFD knowledge gaps, STAGES will identify needs for further research. STAGES will also develop innovative solutions to achieve an effective collaboration between the broad range of stakeholders necessary to support MSDF implementation, including policy and governance, science, industry and civil society. Moreover, the role and input of MSFD stakeholders will be central to the activities of the project and to the proposals for a science policy interface which will be delivered by the project. The partnership has been constructed to include a combination of EU/international organizations which can represent a broad constituency of MSFD stakeholders, and national organizations with responsibility to support research and provide advice on MSFD implementation at MS level.</p>

<h3>GENERAL DESCRIPTION</h3>
<p style='font-size:95%'>To evaluate the Patella ferruginea (ribbed mediterranean limpet) distribution and Posidonia oceanica (mediterranean tapeweed) meadows in the Sinis MPA. The Patella ferruginea is endemic to the Mediterranean, it is the most endangered marine species on the list of the European Council Directive 92/43/EEC. Its Mediterranean range has progressively contracted to a few restricted areas and the species is now threatened with extinction. Human pressure is probably the main contributing factor to P. ferruginea's currently endangered status. The experimental studies was realized to evaluate its distribution in the Sinis MPA in relation to the human impact that seems to be the principal cause of the stock decrease. Specific educational programmes were conducted in order to reduce its collection for fishing, food or for fun as decorative objects. The study was also conducted to support local policy development, in order to properly assess the future programmes of conservation in the Sinis MPA. </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>"EU CISE 2020 is an important step towards the accomplishment of the European roadmap for CISE; the project attains the widest possible experimental environment of innovative and collaborative processes between European maritime institutions.EU CISE 2020 takes as reference a broad spectrum of factors in the field of European Integrated Maritime Surveillance, arising from the European legal framework, as well as from studies, pilot and R&D projects accomplished in the last three years; in particular, the project is based on:• the CISE Roadmap developed by DG MARE• the results of European pilot projects BluemassMed and MARSUNO,• the work performed by CISE TAG-Technical Advisory Group,• the European studies on maritime surveillance already carried out,• the results of Security research projects in progress, with particular reference to PERSEUS and SEABILLA• the needs of innovation expressed by the maritime stakeholders arising from their operational experience in managing maritime surveillance processes and systems at European, international and national levels.Under the guidance of a Stakeholder Board, EU CISE 2020 will manage in parallel the elaboration of the action plan for the operational validation of new elements of R&D needed to develop CISE (concepts of architecture, concepts of operation, standards of data and services, new services, new processes, ...), the development of an open European test bed for incremental advancement of CISE in the medium-long term, the independent Verification & Validation of the new elements of R&D, as well as the assessment of organizational instruments necessary to sustain the appropriate governance structure and to stimulate public-private cooperation.EU CISE 2020 draws a major space of opportunity for national and European maritime Institutions to collaboratively innovate their processes and systems, and for European enterprises to develop a new range of solutions and services competitive in the international market." </p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>BlueBRIDGE responds to the Juncker Investment Plan opening funding opportunities for e-Infrastructures, innovating current practices in producing & delivering scientific knowledge advice to competent authorities & enlarges the spectrum of growth opportunities in distinctive Blue Growth areas. BlueBRIDGE builds on existing EU and International e-Infrastructures providing capacity building in interdisciplinary research communities of scientists, data managers & educators in academic institutions & industries focusing on 4 major challenges: 1) stock assessment 2) socio-economic performance analysis in aquaculture 3) fisheries & habitat degradation monitoring 4) Science Education & knowledge bridging on protection & management of marine resources. BlueBRIDGE capitalizes on past investments and uses a proven e-Infrastructure connecting 1500\ scientists, integrating \50 repositories, executing \13,000 models & algorithms/month; providing access to over a billion quality records in repositories worldwide, with 99,7% service availability. BlueBRIDGE focuses on user needs, opening services & data to actors & liaising with competent agencies & SME Innovation Clusters. Major results include service-driven research environments addressing concrete challenges, data and a wide range of user defined Blue Growth indicators. BlueBRIDGE leverages a set of common services that together foster the realization of an innovative infrastructure-based approach for collaborative knowledge and data sharing, publishing, citation, traceability & trust concretely contributing to the e-Infrastructure Commons. BlueBRIDGE will be deployed in 30 months by an authoritative & complementary consortium with expertise in multiple scientific domains. It bundles forces from International Government Organizations, research institutes, industry, SMEs, Science Education and computer science domains, establishing a network with a proven track in VREs & e-Infrastructures, marine, environmental & fisheries science & economy.</p>

<p style='font-size:95%'>The BLUEISLANDS project aims to identify, address and mitigate the effect of the seasonal variation of waste generated on Mediterranean islands as an effect of tourism.
By improving knowledge about waste streams, building common guidelines and improving synergies among MED islands’ communities, BLUEISLANDS project aims to
fuel local loops of circular economy and promote sustainable tourism patterns. The project is carried out by 14 partners, including 2 national, 4 regional and 3 local authorities representing a total of 9 Mediterranean islands, 2 representatives of economic operators, 2 research institutions and 1 international association specialised in resource management.</p>
