GENERAL DESCRIPTION

To evaluate the Patella ferruginea (ribbed mediterranean limpet) distribution and Posidonia oceanica (mediterranean tapeweed) meadows in the Sinis MPA. The Patella ferruginea is endemic to the Mediterranean, it is the most endangered marine species on the list of the European Council Directive 92/43/EEC. Its Mediterranean range has progressively contracted to a few restricted areas and the species is now threatened with extinction. Human pressure is probably the main contributing factor to P. ferruginea's currently endangered status. The experimental studies was realized to evaluate its distribution in the Sinis MPA in relation to the human impact that seems to be the principal cause of the stock decrease. Specific educational programmes were conducted in order to reduce its collection for fishing, food or for fun as decorative objects. The study was also conducted to support local policy development, in order to properly assess the future programmes of conservation in the Sinis MPA.
