Title: Macaronesian research strategy

Summary: MaReS project (Macaronesian Research Strategy) arises from the reflection on the Macaronesian archipelagos R & D systems position within the European Research Area and the international scientific context. Considering that the size of their R & D systems makes it difficult for these islands to compete effectively, there is a need to determine a competitive research and development strategy in these Atlantic European insular regions.

The project is based on three initiatives that canalise R & D in their respective regions.
1. The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (lead partner) is a Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (ICTS) financed by the Canary Islands Government and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness whose area of activity is marine science and technology.
2. Madeira Tecnopolo covers strategic areas such as ICT, sustainable development, environment and training, and manages the MITI (Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute) in the field of human- machine interaction with the University of Madeira and the Carnegie Mellon University.
3. The Regional Fund for Science and Technology of the Government of Azores is carrying out two innovative projects in the field of marine science and technology, which are on one hand, the installation of an observatory in the Middle-Atlantic ridge, and on the other hand, the development of blue biotechnology related to ecosystems associated with hydrothermal vents.
