Title: Innovative approaches for marine biodiversity monitoring and assessment of conservation status of nature values in the Baltic Sea

Summary: The project aims at developing concepts for assessment of conservation status of marine biodiversity, including species and habitats and impacts of various human activities. The project is acting in the Baltic Sea in territorial waters and EEZ of Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Sweden, covering the four project areas - Gulf of Riga/Irbe Strait (Estonia/Latvia), Gulf of Finland (Estonia/Finland), Archipelago Sea (Finland), Hano Bight (Sweden).

It aims to apply a regional approach for future marine biodiversity monitoring and cross country co-operation when assessing marine biodiversity in the Baltic Sea.

The project actions involve:

  • Analysis and stocktaking of background information on the EU legal framework for reporting on marine biodiversity and existing data on marine biodiversity and sea uses;
  • Development of a set of new marine biodiversity indicators;
  • Testing the developed indicators and monitoring methods within the four project areas;
  • Demonstration of the application of the new indicators and monitoring methods for assessment of marine biodiversity and marine spatial management;
  • Assessment of the monitoring results and methods;
  • Elaboration of policy recommendations as well as performing active stakeholder information and involvement in assessment of marine biodiversity.
