Title: Innovative participatory forum for the Baltic Sea

Summary: The status of the Baltic Sea has changed dramatically during the last decades. Today it is mentioned as one of the most polluted seas in the world. Many international efforts, actions and political steps have been taken to tackle the problem. However, citizens need to be more involved to increase the environmental awareness of the state of the Baltic Sea and of the actions needed to improve its ecological status. BalticSeaNow.info is increasing environmental awareness and the responsibility of the general public about the current situation and future of the Baltic Sea.

The project is developing channels for public involvement in environmental discussion. The project is establishing a common Baltic Sea web portal with the focus on interactive and participatory elements such as web cameras, online environmental information, social media channels, discussion groups and video clips. Observations and stories produced by the public create a framework for joint discussions, information sharing, development of ideas and participation. The project will culminate in a series of events in the participating countries – for example, a Baltic Sea market tour and public lectures.
